Dhaka National Medical College

Dhaka National Medical College

Dhaka National Medical College traces its origin to the Dhaka National Medical Institute, which was founded in 1925 during the Non-Cooperation Movement against British colonial rule. The movement, led by Mahatma Gandhi, Mawlana Muhammad Ali, and Mawlana Shawkat Ali, inspired the establishment of the institute near Bahadur Shah Park on land donated by Zaminder Raghunath Das. Many nationalist leaders and philanthropists contributed to its development, and its first Governing Body was chaired by the renowned scientist Sir Prafulla Chandra Roy KBE, with members including Sir Khwaza Nazim Uddin KBE, Dr. J.C. Ghosh, and other eminent personalities. Initially, the institute launched a four-year medical course in modern scientific medicine and established a general hospital to serve both as a teaching facility and as a center for medical care.

About Dhaka National Medical College

Over time, the vision to establish a full-fledged medical college gained momentum, and in 1994, under the leadership of Mr. Sadeque Hossain Khoka MP, Dhaka National Medical College officially came into existence. Today, DNMC operates under the regulations of the University of Dhaka, the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BM&DC), and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It functions as a non-political, non-profit institution and has expanded into an 11-story academic and hospital building with modern facilities and ample parking. Graduates of DNMC are eligible for limited registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the United Kingdom and are also qualified to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), opening doors to global career opportunities.

The college is overseen by a governing body appointed by the University of Dhaka, currently chaired by Advocate Kazi Firoz Rashid MP, whose leadership aligns with Bangladesh’s vision of becoming a digital nation. Located in the heart of Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, the college benefits from the vibrant cultural and academic environment of the region. Bangladesh itself, situated in the delta of the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, shares borders with India and Myanmar and is known for its rich history, natural beauty, and resilience despite frequent cyclones and floods. Once part of British India and later Pakistan, Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation in 1971 and is now a parliamentary democracy with a growing emphasis on education and development.

With a literacy rate of over 73%, Bengali as its official language, and the Bangladeshi Taka as its currency, the country continues to progress rapidly. Beyond academics, Bangladesh offers unique experiences for visitors, from the Sundarbans Mangrove Forest and Chittagong Hill Tracts to Srimangal, Rangamati, and the beaches of Cox’s Bazar. Dhaka National Medical College thus represents not only a legacy of nationalist spirit and medical excellence but also a gateway to a nation with deep cultural roots and immense opportunities for students pursuing a medical career.
